Cuba registered 99,093 live births at the end of 2021, 5,945 less than the previous year, and an infant mortality rate of 7.6 per 1,000 births, it was announced today.

The Public Health Minister, Jose Angel Portal Miranda, recalled that in recent years the island kept that last indicator below five and, despite the efforts of the sector’s personnel during the Covid-19 pandemic, the results were not as expected.

“Not complying with it hurts us because of the sensitivity our children mean to us,” lamented Portal Miranda quoted in a press release disclosed by the State portfolio on its web page.

The Directorate of Medical Records and Statistics of Minsap specified that there were no deaths of children under one year old in 23 municipalities of the country, and the infant mortality rate for congenital defects was 0.9, a figure that has decreased in the last four years in relation to the total number of deaths in this population group.

Last year it was 12.5 percent, in 2020 it was 14 percent, 16 percent in 2019, 18.2 percent at the end of 2018 and 20.3 percent in 2017, the publication specified.

The main causes of deaths were associated, fundamentally, with premature birth, low birth weight and uterine growth retardation.

There were 175 confirmed maternal deaths, for a total rate of 176.6 per 100,000 live births. No deaths were reported in 81 municipalities in the country. The main causes were pneumonia associated with Covid-19, embolic phenomena, obstetric hemorrhage and hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disease due to arterial hypertension.

For the Maternal and Infant Program, it is a priority to reduce low birth weight births and to provide individualized follow-up to those with this condition in childcare consultations at the Primary Health Care level.
