The danger posed by nuclear weapons can only disappear with their total eradication, in a transparent, verifiable and irreversible manner, Cuba's First Deputy Foreign Minister Gerardo Peñalver assured on Monday.

Peñalver deemed so at the 2nd Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

This instrument complements the international security, disarmament and non-proliferation architecture, the permanent Cuban Representative to the UN added.

Latin America and the Caribbean, the first Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in a densely populated area, has made the nuclear disarmament a top-priority, the diplomat noted.

Peñalver expressed, “each new State that joins represents a new step forward towards the illegitimating nuclear weapons,” and he reaffirmed his country’s support for efforts aimed at the NPT’s universalization.
