Esteban Lazo, president of Cuba's National Assembly of People's Power (Parliament), emphasized the significance of the Sandinista victory in Nicaragua in 1979, affirming that the Caribbean nation and Nicaragua are brother countries.
In a congratulatory message issued in Havana on the 46th anniversary of the Popular Sandinista Revolution and addressed to his Nicaraguan counterpart, Gustavo Porras, Lazo recalled a statement by Fidel Castro, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, who summarized the importance of that triumph.
"The Sandinista victory is not just a triumph over 45 years of Somoza rule, but a victory over 150 years of foreign domination in the country. It is a victory against centuries of conquest, exploitation, and foreign control. For the first time, Nicaragua’s people have become truly free and independent in their entire history," Lazo emphasized.
In his message, the Cuban Council of State president added that the island fondly remembers the shared history between the two nations and advocated for further strengthening parliamentary relations between both countries.
"It would be an honor to host you and work together for the benefit of our nations and Latin American unity," said the Cuban legislative leader, who also thanked Nicaragua for its continued denunciations of U.S. harassment and the blockade policy imposed against Cuba.
On July 19, 1979, Nicaragua saw the triumph of the third and last armed revolution in Latin America and the Caribbean, following Mexico's (1910) and Cuba's (1959).
