Beijing, Sept 20 (Prensa Latina) Chinese scientists conducted the first cloning of an arctic wolf in the world after two years of work to reproduce an endangered species, news outlets reported on Tuesday.

According to China Daily, this experiment was carried out by the company Sinogene Biotechnology Co based in Beijing, and the cub was born without any problems on June 10. It is a female and was named Maya.

The wolf is currently healthy. Its original cell was taken from the skin of specimen from Canada and grew inside a female beagle dog.

The authors of this project claim that this procedure hopes to save that and other endangered species, but local observers are drawing attention on ethical and technical matters and the impact on biodiversity if they keep on cloning animals.
