Beijing, Sep 26 (Prensa Latina) China on Monday criticized that the United States resorts to unilateral sanctions against countries such as Cuba, Belarus, Syria, or Venezuela to exert "maximum pressure," and called on Washington to reflect on the consequent damage, even to its own economy.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin described Washington as “the superpower of sanctions,” as it has increased punitive measures against 40 nations up to 933 percent between 2000 and 2021.

He charged that with such a stance, the White House has violated the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter, generated a negative impact on nearly half of the world’s population, increased humanitarian crises, and disrupted the international economic and trade order.

“It threatens the right to life, challenges the right to self-determination, undermines the right to development, and constitutes a systematic, persistent, and large-scale violation of human rights,” he said.

Wang urged US congressmen to reflect on the aftermath of unilateral sanctions, at a time of the highest inflation in decades in their country.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman urged them to go for cooperation, move away from conflict, and stick to multilateralism and solidarity.

“The United States needs to listen to the just call of the international community, curb its hegemonic attitude of deliberately imposing sanctions and play a constructive role in promoting peace and development in the world,” he concluded.
