As the opponent of Danish Jonas Bjerre, the Brazilian Alexandr Fier will defend today his solo leadership of the Elite group in the international chess tournament Capablanca in Memoriam, based at the Habana Libre hotel.

Fier got his third straight win at the expense of Venezuelan-born Spaniard Eduardo Iturrizaga in 40 moves of an English opening.

He will now move the white pieces against Bjerre, his closest pursuer with 2.5 units after beating Cuban Elier Miranda the day before.

Last Friday was completed with the victory of Omar Almeida against the also Cuban Lelys Martínez and the draw of Luis Ernesto Quesada against Carlos Daniel Albornoz, both hosts, and the German Rasmus Svane against the Indian Raunak Sadhwani.

The latter appears with two units and follows Fier and Bjerre in the table, with 1.5, Svane, Iturrizaga and Luis Ernesto share positions, while Albornoz and Almeida have a streak and Lelys and Elier are last with half a unit.

This Saturday the actions of Women's Continental Championship of the Americas will begin in the same venue, with more than 70 participants and the main Cuban players as an attraction.
