Bolivia: President Rules Out Term Extension
especiales

A bill promoting Bolivian President Luis Arce's term extension seemed to be dead before its debate, after the head of state flatly ruled out such possibility on social media.
Arce wrote on his X profile, “(…) as a National Government, we absolutely oppose this bill and made it clear to the public opinion that we were unaware of it, and we are not part of this initiative or any other that seeks to alter the democratic and constitutional order, disrupt the electoral calendar, and cast doubt on the work of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).”
The head of State reacted in this “forceful” way to the bill presented by Senator Pedro Benjamin Vargas, “who does not belong to our party (…),” Arce clarified regarding the legislator who is close to Senate leader Andronico Rodriguez.
Arce emphasized in the post that the National Government is absolutely respectful of the provisions of the State’s Political Constitution and the popular will expressed at the elections.
Consistent with this concept, he urged “(…) the national assembly members that the moment this bill is discussed, it should be rejected without further action, since the people need certainty regarding the holding of the runoff to elect the president and vice president of the Plurinational State of Bolivia.”
Arce confirmed that there is no possibility of extending the National Government’s term, and he will hand over the Presidency on November 8 to whomever the population supports in the October 19 runoff.
