Madrid, Mar 16 (Prensa Latina) About 600 million people in the world speak Spanish, of which 493 million are native speakers of the language, the second in the world after Mandarin Chinese, according to Spain's Instituto Cervantes.

The Spanish institution celebrates this year its 30th anniversary and is pledged to that language from science, technology and culture, beyond its geographical expansion, since official data reveal that from 2050 the number of Spanish speakers will decrease in percentage terms.

Directors of this center highlight the importance of establishing university agreements on research in these spheres, and turning Spanish into a prestigious language, especially with its presence in the United States, where is the second most spoken language.

The Instituto Cervantes focuses its efforts on developing collaboration with Latin American higher studies centers and promoting bilingual scientific publications, in Spanish and English.

Another aim is to increase the presence in sub-Saharan Africa, due to the increase in the population in the countries of the area, as well as to open a similar center in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, and in the Ivory Coast.
