United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk today condemned U.S. actions aimed at preventing Cuba's access to petroleum and issued a stark warning regarding the impact on the island's population.

Speaking before the 61st regular session of the Human Rights Council, Türk stated that measures adopted by the administration of President Donald Trump are deepening the crisis in the largest of the Antilles — a nation that has been subjected for more than 60 years to an economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by Washington.

"Nothing can justify the suffocation of an entire population," he asserted, expressing grave concern over the consequences of these actions for vulnerable groups, including children with cancer and pregnant women.

Recently, High Commissioner spokesperson Marta Hurtado had already raised alarms regarding the risks posed by U.S. actions to essential areas such as public health, noting that the prolonged and sustained impact of the blockade generates compounding economic hardship and sharpens pre-existing difficulties.

Hurtado further noted that a broad range of services depend on fuel imports. "Intensive care units and emergency rooms are at risk, as are the production, supply, and storage of vaccines, blood products, and other temperature-sensitive medications," a statement issued by her office indicated.

The High Commissioner reiterated his call for the lifting of all unilateral measures in light of their broad and indiscriminate impact on the civilian population, and reaffirmed that such measures constitute a violation of human rights.
