Brazil’s Workers' Party Congress Voices Support for Cuba

The eighth National Congress of the Workers' Party (PT) of Brazil continued its sessions today, dedicating significant space to acts of international solidarity, with a particular focus on the situations in Cuba, Venezuela, and Palestine.
During the event, diplomatic representatives and parliamentarians from these nations denounced economic sanctions, military aggressions, and violations of international law. Simultaneously, they advocated for cooperation between nations as the essential path toward peace and national sovereignty.
The Cuban Ambassador to Brazil, Víctor Cairo, voiced a firm rejection of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against the Caribbean island, noting that the country now also faces an energy siege. Cairo affirmed that this represents a "policy of permanent aggression that seeks to impede the development of the Cuban people and destroy the Revolution, which has existed for over 67 years." He emphasized that his nation continues to struggle to generate hope and prosperity, expressing gratitude for the PT's invitation and for the public statements made by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva against U.S. policy.
Venezuelan Deputy Saúl Ortega addressed the assembly to recall the military aggression against Caracas and other locations within his country, which was ordered by Donald Trump on January 3rd. According to Ortega, the attack resulted in the deaths of more than 100 people, including 32 Cuban nationals. This operation led to the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, legislator Cilia Flores, both of whom have remained imprisoned in New York since that time.
Ortega maintained that Venezuela has endured political and media attacks, as well as attempts at destabilization and violence against state institutions. In response, he stated, the Venezuelan people have demonstrated "resistance and the will to reaffirm their sovereignty in the face of external pressures." He assured attendees that Venezuela remains committed to regional unity and the socialist project initiated by Hugo Chávez in 1999.
Representing Palestine, Ambassador Marwan Jebril lamented the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza resulting from Israeli military actions since October 2023. Although a ceasefire is currently in effect, Jebril described the situation as a "systematic violation of international law" and reiterated that the Palestinian people will persist in their struggle for freedom and self-determination.
Finally, the Ambassador of the Arab League in Brazil, Ibrahim Alzeben, highlighted the global significance of the Palestinian cause and defended the territorial borders established in 1967. He further noted the necessity of strengthening international solidarity mechanisms and expressed confidence in President Lula’s leadership within multilateral forums.
