Cardinal Beniamino Stella is on a pastoral visit to Cuba, as Pope Francis' envoy, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Pope St. John Paul II's apostolic tour of Cuba.

During his stay in Cuba, Stella will meet with authorities and take part in other pastoral events, diplomatic sources informed.

Caridad Diego Bello, head of the Religious Affairs Office of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC)’s Central Committee, Deputy Foreign Minister Elio Rodríguez Perdomo, and Archbishop Giampiero Gloder, Apostolic Nuncio to Cuba, met with the Pope’s envoy on Monday.

January 21 marked the 25th anniversary of the beginning of Pope St. John Paul II’s pastoral visit to Cuba, the first by a High Pontiff of the Catholic Church to the Caribbean country.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel recently recalled on Twitter the Pope’s pastoral visit and his five-day stay, during which the High Pontiff officiated open masses in several provinces.

His successors, Benedict XVI and Francis, also paid pastoral visits to Cuba in 2012 and 2015, respectively.
