A central avenue in Havana is now showcasing the results of a creative effort led by a group of young people determined to turn the intersection of Malecón Street and Italia Avenue into a space where art and well-being converge.

The initiative, which aims to bring life back to this public area, is made possible through the support and funding of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).

“This intervention opens a space for dialogue and expression for young graduates of the Tactical Urbanism Workshop, who were supported by the Ad Urbis collective,” said Lorenza Strano, Communications Specialist at AICS, during a press briefing.

Strano highlighted that the collaboration between the Italian agency and Cuba spans nearly two decades. Its impact is visible in the restoration of historic buildings, the construction of social housing, and support for farmers in advancing sustainable agriculture.

“This is the culmination of the workshop, where the young participants are putting into practice the design they developed during their training,” she explained.

A multidisciplinary team of geographers, communicators, artists, and architects is responsible for the transformation being carried out at the site.

According to Strano, the agency places significant emphasis on communication and on how to make such processes visible, highlighting the talent present in the city, and particularly in the municipality of Centro Habana.

AICS also considers it equally important that young people create a space for dialogue with the community and convey a message of sustainability.

This action, located at a key intersection, is being carried out as part of the “Avenida Italia Project” and forms part of a broader strategy to reactivate spaces with potential. The initiative combines technical solutions, citizen participation, and collaborative design.
