An exhibition of posters alluding to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, was inaugurated today at the Embassy of Cuba in the United States with the presence of Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío.
The event—part of the program leading up to Fidel’s centenary in 2026—was attended by representatives from the intellectual and cultural communities, political parties, social movements, solidarity organizations, and, more broadly, friends of Cuba.
In his remarks about the Cuban leader, Fernández de Cossío highlighted the “extraordinary characteristics concentrated in a single individual” and affirmed that Castro made a great contribution to a better world, adding, “I believe that is something for which he will be remembered.”
Earlier, Cuba’s Chief of Mission, Lianys Torres, welcomed the participants at the evening gathering on Wednesday, where poet Nubia Kai recited one of her works dedicated to the island, to Fidel, and to the Revolution.
Activist Mark Friedman, co-chair of the Los Angeles-based Hands Off Cuba Committee, also addressed the audience. The Embassy expressed gratitude for his dedication and efforts in bringing the exhibition to fruition.
Friedman announced that a similar event will be organized in Los Angeles on October 25, “when once again we will protest vehemently against the U.S. blockade of Cuba as part of the actions leading up to the vote at the United Nations.”
Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926, in Birán, in what is now Holguín Province in eastern Cuba. His passing on November 25, 2016, at the age of 90, caused international commotion.
Throughout his life, Cuba’s State Security services identified hundreds of plots at various stages of development aimed at physically eliminating him. Between 1958 and 2000, he survived 634 assassination attempts.
Castro requested that no statues or plazas be erected in his honor. For that reason, at the monolith where his ashes rest in Santa Ifigenia Cemetery in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, only the five letters of his name are inscribed.
