Cuban province fosters clean energy generation

The photovoltaic solar park (PSF by its Spanish acronym) of Rojas, a community located in the municipality of Remedios in the central province of Villaclara, is currently at 90 % completion and, after its next connection to the National Electric System, it will be able to save the country about 2,000 tons of fuel per year.
Osvaldo Rodriguez Echevarria, top authority of the Integral Project Management in the province, told Cuban News Agency that the more than 44,000 panels that make up the station, whose estimated power of almost 22 megawatts will not only contribute to reduce the consumption of imported crude oil, but also to protect the environment, have already been installed.
The generation of clean electric energy, such as this one, which basically depends on the sun's radiation, is one of the most effective alternatives to promote the economic development of the nation without failing to comply with the protocols of conservation of the natural environment, especially in times when it is increasingly urged to promote social progress based on the ecological industry, he added.
He also explained that the new site covers some 32 hectares and that work is currently underway to protect the complex cabling system, the assembly of the meteorological station, the fiber optic connections and the installation of direct and alternating current.
This project, the executive continued, derives from the Cuban government's interest in counteracting the energy deficit of the archipelago, also conditioned by the negative impact of the economic blockade imposed by the United States.
Rodriguez Echevarría confirmed that this PSF is part of a broad program that foresees the installation of 46 similar stations in Cuba by 2030, including Anton Diaz and Calabazar de Sagua, located in the municipalities of Santa Clara and Encrucijada, respectively.
Subject to the sustainable development objectives included in the 2020-2030 Agenda, the Republic of Cuba maintains its firm intention to transform the country's energy matrix through the preferred use of renewable energy sources and the gradual eradication of the use of highly polluting fossil fuels.
