Havana, January 7 (RHC) The General Customs of the Republic of Cuba is implementing an international airport communication project to strengthen crime detection and interception capabilities, local press reported today

Called Aircop, the program facilitates interconnection between air terminals of countries in the area to confront attempts of international drug trafficking, terrorism, and illegal trade of other goods, reports Granma newspaper.

According to the report, the initiative, which is being implemented at José Martí International Airport, will be extended in the future to the Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport in Varadero, Matanzas, another important gateway to the Cuban archipelago.

Customs authorities recently told Cuban television that 15 drug trafficking operations were thwarted in 2022 as part of the implementation of Cuba's zero-tolerance policy on this scourge

According to the newspaper, the need for technical means of detection is covered to guarantee the security inspections of cargo, passengers, and their luggage, which also allows to speed up the border crossing.

The general director of customs processes, Yamila Martínez, pointed out that the presence of canine units that concentrate their efforts on detecting risks associated with terrorism and drugs is guaranteed.

The head of the General Customs of the Republic, Nelson Cordovés, said that actions to combat illegalities at the border are carried out with a balance between facilitation and security of the country, and proof of this is that in 2022 more than 85% of travelers arriving to the Island, on average, pass through the green channel, which avoided unnecessary delays in the facilities.
