The presentation of the Cuban book Jardines de la Reina: la esperanza (Gardens of the Queen: Hope) at the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) was warmly welcomed in Havana.
PhD in science Patricia Gonzalez Diaz, president of the Scientific Council of the Marine Research Center of the University of Havana, was in charge of promoting the work on Monday, in which 35 authors from 12 institutions in the country took part.
The text will be a contribution to the dossier that Cuba is proposing to UNESCO with the aim that the reef system of southern Cuba obtains the category of Natural World Heritage Site, said Gonzalez Diaz, according to the Cuban News Agency, scientists present at the meeting.
The new specialized research reveals the richness of the Jardines de la Reina National Park, considered one of the largest and best-preserved natural marine ecosystems in the Caribbean.
Thanks to the support of Unesco and other international partners, a team of 35 authors created the book Jardines de la Reina: la esperanza, which combines rigorous science and high-level underwater photography, making visible the existing biodiversity in these protected waters.
In line with the calls of the 3rd UN Ocean Conference 2025, taking place in Nice, France, the publication of the volume reinforces the urgency of protecting our seas from overexploitation, pollution and climate change, because they feed millions and sustain life on the planet.
