The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA by its Spanish acronym) has announced its tribute days in the country to Cuban archives and archivists, which will be held from this month until next November 3.
The initiatives include workshops, conferences, theoretical events, professional exchanges and diffusion spaces, Isbel Vivar Gonzalez, head of the Directorate of Documentary Management and Archives of that agency (DGDA by its Spanish acronym), told the Cuban News Agency.
In details, she explained that the main actions would begin on June 9, International Archives Day, officialized in 2007 by its corresponding council, in allusion to its constitution on that date in 1948, under the auspices of UNESCO.
On Saturday, the International Archives Day event will be held at Jose Marti Park, in the central province of Ciego de Avila, and Sunday, the Preserving the Past, Promoting the Future Workshop, organized by the General Directorate of Education of Artemisa; while in the Oscar Mateo Lopez Basic Secondary School, in Santiago de Cuba, a special workshop will be held.
The Cuban Archivist's Day ceremony will be held on the 3rd of the same month at the Fausto Theater in the western province of Matanzas, in honor of Joaquin LLaveras Martinez, who in 1922 was appointed director of the National Archive of the Island.
The National Archive of the Republic of Cuba is the fifth such center created in Latin America, after Argentina (1821), Mexico (1823), Bolivia (1825) and Brazil (1838).
