China stated today that the coercive tactics employed by the United States toward Latin American nations have proven ineffective, while highlighting the excellent state of cooperation between Beijing and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks during the regular press conference in response to questions about reports published by The Economist and The New York Times.

Those outlets documented how Washington’s aggressive pressure campaign in the region has yielded limited results in its attempt to reduce Latin American ties with China.

“This proves that practices of coercion, intimidation, and domination lack popular support and are increasingly unworkable,” the spokesperson said.

Lin stressed that China and Latin America are “good friends and partners” that cooperate on the basis of “equality, mutual benefit, and joint development.”

The Chinese official underscored that the Latin American and Caribbean region “is not anyone’s backyard” and has the right to choose its own path of development and cooperative partners.

China, he added, welcomes all countries to foster friendly and cooperative relations with Latin American nations “on the basis of equality and respect.”

Lin urged the United States to end its coercion of Latin American countries into taking sides and to stop interfering in their internal affairs.

“Any attempt to undermine the friendly relations between China and Latin America, or obstruct mutually beneficial cooperation, will not succeed,” he affirmed.

In a recent interview with Prensa Latina, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez emphasized the importance of Beijing as a trade and investment partner for the region, noting that this engagement takes place in a way “different from U.S. imperialism.”

“This is a relationship based on international law, complementarity, reciprocal benefit, and sustainable development, with full consideration and respect for our culture and independence,” Rodríguez said.

In his view, Latin America and the Caribbean need to diversify their international relations and strengthen integration within the Global South, while China consolidates itself as a major country and a significant international actor.

“At a time when the United States seeks to revive the Monroe Doctrine or Manifest Destiny, our region finds in China a clear partner,” the minister concluded.
