"Climate change threatens the human race´s future and damages sustainable development, and therefore we claim urgent and coherent solutions", said Elba Rosa Perez, Minister of Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba. In her address yesterday at the high-level session of the 20th UN Conference on Climate Change (COP20) underway in Lima, Peru, Perez said the new global agreement expected for next year must respect the principles and provisions of the Convention.

"Not only must we keep the commitment to the comprehensive struggle in times when the world continues under an economic, financial and trade order, deeply unjust and unequal", said Perez.

"The unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, now in the name of globalization, worsen systemic inequalities and environmental degradation", she said.

"It is up to the international community to seek solutions, based on our common but differentiated responsibilities".

COP20 is coming to a close and next Friday it should conclude with the presentation of a draft on a new world climate agreement to be ratified in Paris in 2015.
