The most recent meeting between the Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and activists and representatives from groups associated to the struggle for the full rights of LGBTIQ+, is a rebuttal (another one) to those who state that the government does not pay close attention to the demands of that group of people and shields itself in the lack of consensus to not to take action in favor of policies of inclusion and explicit recognition of this and other communities.

The Family Code Draft Bill, which will be submitted to public discussions, is a downright revolutionary document. What’s more, as acknowledged by some in the meeting, this is going to be a law that most of people would have expected, a law devoted to the acknowledgement and protection of all families, regardless of its nature and ramifications.

The document, obviously, is not only about families formed by same-sex couples, as it is a much more comprehensive concept. But it is evident the will to acknowledge the rights of all families, starting from the principle of equality and the understanding of differences.

A lot of debates lies ahead with ethics and with a science-based approach; certain beliefs must be defended with determination as prejudice still exists; patience and firmness will be necessary…But it is crystal-clear that the government is an ally in this struggle to achieve the pretty-much awaited full inclusion. Much remains to be done. And we are doing so.
