A nationwide campaign led by the civil rights organization Mijente has placed more than 200 billboards in 31 U.S. cities criticizing the budget and operations of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, arguing that the agency’s funding comes at a high cost to taxpayers.

More than 200 billboards criticizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) became visible Monday in several cities across the United States, including Miami, as part of a campaign denouncing what organizers describe as the high financial and social cost of the agency’s enforcement operations.

The campaign, titled “ICE Is Costing Us”, was launched by the civil rights group Mijente. The billboards have been installed in 31 cities — among them Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Antonio — and are scheduled to remain on display for four weeks.

“For far too long, our government has prioritized building cages and investing billions of dollars in an immigration enforcement apparatus that has left families torn apart and communities terrorized,” said Marisa Franco, co-founder of the Mijente Support Committee, in a statement.

The billboards feature images of ICE agents conducting immigration arrests or carrying military-style weapons. According to the organization, spending on military-grade equipment for ICE has increased by 600 percent in recent years.

Most of the signs read, “Your tax dollars are being wasted,” followed by “ICE’s cruelty costs you $28 billion.” That figure corresponds to the agency’s annual budget.

“Millions of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, yet this violent agency continues to operate with a blank check. It is clear that these decisions do not make us safer nor do they improve our economic security. Our billboards highlight these choices and demand a different path,” Franco added.

Other signs compare federal spending on ICE’s equipment to the estimated 17 million people who could lose health coverage under Medicaid due to budget cuts proposed by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Additional messages displayed as part of the campaign include: “They get billions to beat us; we get layoffs and rent hikes,” and “Funding ICE is a direct path to fascism.”
