Cuba's Ministry of the Interior announced Wednesday that Border Guard troops repelled an armed attack carried out by a U.S.-registered vessel operating within Cuban territorial waters.

According to the ministry's statement, a high-speed boat bearing a Florida registration number (FL7726SH) was detected at approximately one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel, near Cayo Falcones, in the municipality of Corralillo, Villa Clara province.

As a Cuban Border Guard unit composed of five officers approached the vessel to conduct an identification check, the occupants of the boat opened fire on the Cuban personnel, the communiqué stated.

As a result of the attack, the commanding officer of the Cuban vessel sustained injuries. Cuban forces responded in accordance with standard self-defense protocols.

As of press time, four of the assailants had been killed and six others wounded. All injured individuals were evacuated and are currently receiving medical treatment at Cuban health facilities.

The Ministry of the Interior reaffirmed that the defense of Cuban territorial waters constitutes a fundamental pillar of national security and reiterated the Cuban state's commitment to protecting its sovereignty against any act of aggression.

Competent authorities are continuing their investigation to achieve full clarification of the events.
