China highlighted today its expectations ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit in India, where President Xi Jinping will present proposals and address international issues and cooperation efforts with other leaders.

Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Mao Ning stated that BRICS constitutes one of the most important platforms for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries.

Since its creation, the mechanism has defended multilateralism, fairness, and justice, while also promoting shared development, the official noted.

Mao stressed that China attaches great importance to cooperation within BRICS and actively participates in its activities.

During the summit, Xi will deliver a speech and engage in exchanges with other leaders on the international situation, the development of the mechanism, and the deepening of practical cooperation.

According to the spokeswoman, the president will present Chinese initiatives and proposals to guide the development of cooperation within the so-called "Greater BRICS."

Mao indicated that Beijing is ready to work with other members to ensure stable and sustained development of collaboration and to contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

The official added that Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also hold a bilateral meeting, which is currently being coordinated by both sides.

It will be the third consecutive meeting between the two leaders, following their encounters in Kazan and Tianjin, Mao noted.

The spokeswoman expressed China’s willingness to work with India to strengthen communication, expand cooperation, and properly manage differences from a strategic and long-term perspective.

The 18th BRICS Summit will take place in New Delhi this weekend, focused on articulating strategies to jointly confront a turbulent international scenario marked by rising conflicts and protectionism.

Financial discussions occupy a prominent place on the agenda, featuring proposals to facilitate cross-border payments and increase the interoperability of member countries' payment systems, although no agreement currently exists to create a common currency for the bloc.

Cooperation in local currencies constitutes another key area of work, as the 2025 Rio de Janeiro Summit declaration backed local-currency financing mechanisms and dialogue regarding a BRICS cross-border payment system.

This is a point that Beijing has championed in previous meetings, alongside strengthening the group's financial safety net.

China will assume the BRICS presidency in 2027 and expressed its readiness to deepen cooperation during that period across trade and investment, the digital economy, services, green minerals, artificial intelligence, and special economic zones.
