Cuba's Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a reception Wednesday for the staff of the Cuban diplomatic mission in Ecuador, who were expelled from the country under what officials characterized as unjust circumstances. The gathering was presided over by Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, member of the Political Bureau and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Emilio Lozada García, head of the Department of International Relations of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party.
During the emotionally charged event, Deputy Foreign Minister Josefina Vidal Ferreiro stated that on March 4, the Ecuadorian government took the unprecedented step of declaring all Cuban embassy personnel persona non grata in what she described as a hostile, unfriendly, and wholly unsubstantiated action.
"The unfriendly action against Cuba and its diplomatic staff in Quito is a demonstration of the servility and total subordination of the current Ecuadorian government to the interests and directives of the United States government," Vidal Ferreiro said.
The deputy minister emphasized that the decision in no way reflects the sentiments or the will of the Ecuadorian people. She further argued that the expulsion is not an isolated incident, but rather part of a broader U.S. strategy toward Latin America aimed at undermining regional unity and dismantling integration efforts.
Ambassador Basilio Gutiérrez, for his part, reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of Cuban diplomacy to uphold the values of the Revolution at any cost. He added that the Ecuadorian government's decision comes amid a period of escalating U.S. aggression against Cuba.
"We state with complete integrity that our team in that Andean sister nation strictly complied with respect for the laws and legal order of the Ecuadorian state, without interfering in its internal affairs, in accordance with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations," the ambassador declared.
Gutiérrez also acknowledged the numerous expressions of affection, solidarity, and support the departing diplomatic staff received from prominent figures, political and social organizations, and sectors across Ecuadorian society, all of whom condemned what he called their government's shameful conduct.
