UN Learns About Cuba's Natural Disaster Prevention Actions

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Kamal Kishore, is visiting Cuba starting today to learn firsthand about the island's actions in this sphere.

The central objective of the stay is to deepen understanding of the Cuban disaster risk reduction model, assess how the country mitigates the effects of climate change, and review joint projects within the framework of work with the international organization.

Kishore toured the headquarters of the Civil Defense General Staff this Monday, accompanied by Nail Arenas, head of the UNDRR Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean.

The delegation was received by Major General Ramón Pardo Guerra and his work team, in a meeting that reaffirms the shared commitment to prevention and resilience in the face of disasters, the Cuban institution reported.

Both parties analyzed the implementation of actions to confront extreme phenomena such as drought, highlighting cooperation between Cuba and United Nations agencies.

The representative also visited the Institute of Meteorology, a key entity in the national strategy to anticipate disasters and organize timely measures.

As a Caribbean island nation, Cuba is highly exposed to hurricanes, droughts, floods, and sea level rise. In this context, the island has demonstrated to the world a solid culture of Civil Defense and risk reduction, forged over decades of confronting diverse contingencies.
