Cuban Foreign Minister: Marco Rubio Publicly Admits Damage Caused by U.S. Sanctions Against Cuba

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez highlighted today that "for the first time" U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has recognized that the intensification of the blockade and sanctions imposed by Washington on Havana for over six decades cause suffering to the people of the Caribbean nation, even though he later attempted to shift responsibility using "lies."

"For the first time, the U.S. Secretary of State [Marco Rubio] has recognized the application against Cuba of 'the strongest sanctions in the history' of the bilateral relationship and that 'tragically, the Cuban people are suffering' their impact," the diplomat wrote on his X profile.

Additionally, he criticized the top official for insisting on spreading falsehoods and threats against the island in a vain attempt to manipulate public opinion. Thus, he argued, "true to his calculated design," Rubio "insists over and over again on the same lie and the same threats against Cuba, to gain attention, seek support, and attempt to manipulate international public opinion, while subjecting the Cuban people to unprecedented collective punishment."

In an exclusive interview with the Colombian channel NTN24, the head of U.S. diplomacy admitted the suffering that economic and financial coercion has caused the Cuban population, but accused Cuba's leaders of being responsible for that situation—allegations Havana has consistently rejected. "We have put the strongest sanctions in the history of the relationship we have had with Cuba on them. Tragically, the Cuban people are suffering," he claimed.

Contrary to Washington's narrative, the most recent report by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Unilateral Coercive Measures, Alena Douhan, contains overwhelming evidence confirming what previous reports from UN agencies have documented over several decades: that the blockade constitutes a form of collective punishment that violates the human rights of millions of people.
