New Solar Park in Cuba Features Energy Storage System

Cuba has placed the Major General Ángel del Castillo Agramonte Photovoltaic Solar Park into full operation, incorporating five megawatts (MW) into the national electro-energetic system, as reported by the newspaper Granma.

Located in the municipality of Majagua, within the province of Ciego de Ávila, this facility is the first of its kind in the Caribbean nation to feature one megawatt of backup energy storage through the use of batteries. Furthermore, it represents the beginning of the second phase of a 120-megawatt donation made by the government of the People's Republic of China to Cuba.

Daniel Carrasco Camejo, director of the Integrated Project Management at the Ciego de Ávila Electric Company, explained that the system's battery is utilized to “guarantee voltage quality and frequency regulation,” while also allowing for local autonomy in the event of power supply failures.

During the construction and commissioning process of the park, approximately twenty Chinese specialists participated alongside Cuban construction forces.

At the inauguration ceremony, deep gratitude was expressed to the Government and people of the People's Republic of China for their constant solidarity with their Cuban counterparts.
