A wave of concern swept through la Roja on Wednesday when Lamine Yamal suffered a setback while scoring the winning penalty in Barcelona’s 1-0 victory over Celta. The 18-year-old star has been diagnosed with a "lesion in the biceps femoris of the left leg" and will not play for Barcelona again this season. While his World Cup spot is not yet in jeopardy, his form is a major question mark. Dr. Pedro Luis Ripoll warned that the relapse rate for such injuries is 30%, stating, "I see Lamine Yamal at his peak during the second phase; that would be the most prudent approach."
Brazil: Rodrygo Out, Neymar’s Potential Return
Brazil’s attacking options have taken a significant hit. While Rodrygo was ruled out in March, 19-year-old sensation Estêvão suffered a muscular injury during Chelsea’s recent defeat to Manchester United. Chelsea’s interim manager, Calum McFarlane, admitted uncertainty: "I only know he won't be available for us... I'm sure he has high hopes for the World Cup, but I don't know." These absences have fueled a national debate regarding the inclusion of Neymar, who is currently seeking rhythm with Santos to convince manager Carlo Ancelotti he is ready for North America.
Argentina: Tears for "Cuti" Romero
The defending champions are also reeling. Argentina lost promising striker Joaquín Panichelli to a second ACL tear in March. More recently, defensive anchor "Cuti" Romero suffered a cruciate ligament injury following a collision with his own goalkeeper. Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi noted the defender's distress, saying, "Romero, above all, loves Tottenham, and people need to know he is suffering because he can no longer play for us this season."
France and Germany: Confirmed Absences
France will be without Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitiké, who suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. Meanwhile, Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé caused a brief scare on Friday after requesting a substitution due to "muscular discomfort in the hamstrings of the left leg," though the club later ruled out a serious injury.
Germany faces its own setbacks, as Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry is officially out due to an adductor tear. "Like the rest of the country, I will cheer the boys on from home," Gnabry stated. Furthermore, goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen’s chances of making the squad are described as "very slim" by coach Julian Nagelsmann due to persistent injury issues.
Other nations are also affected: Mexico has ruled out goalkeeper Luis Malagón, Croatia remains hopeful for Joško Gvardiol’s recovery from a leg fracture, and Turkey’s Arda Güler has been sidelined with a femoral biceps injury, adding to the growing list of stars fighting the clock.
