Iran: Another Treacherous Blow by Trump
While the Trump-backed Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, of regrettable Cuban origin, announced an upcoming trip to Tel Aviv—supposedly to pressure Israel into accepting a US-Iran nuclear agreement, according to intentional leaks—the armed aggression of both reactionary entities possessing atomic weapons against the Persian nation was underway. This aggression, according to the genocidal Netanyahu, had been plotted for two weeks prior.
The aggression aims, among other things, to bring about regime change, including the assassination of its main leaders. Trump has incited a population he has been massacring with powerful weaponry, resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians, including 148 girls from a school destroyed by US bombs, as well as Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and four of his relatives.
Tehran has countered the aggression with attacks not only on Israel, but also on US military bases in the region, in addition to closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's oil trade passes.
While a Western world that dances to the tune of the United States applauds the ignominy against the Iranian people, the rest of the world denounces the act and, as with the military aggression ordered by Trump against Venezuela and the kidnapping of its president, calls for solidarity with the victim and, so far, nothing more.
A Western world that applauds the messianic figure in the White House, undeterred by the possibility of turning an entire nation to ashes, under the pretext of preventing it from building a nuclear bomb; that is, it’s admitted that it does not have one, amidst talks that, for the first time, were progressing well, but what seemed like a dream, Trump and his cronies turned into a nightmare.
A vile act by the billionaire president, which lacked congressional or other approval—as is his custom—amid shocking allegations linking him to a sex offender who “committed suicide” after his arrest, and reports that newspaper pages clearly implicating the narcissistic leader have disappeared.
GLOBAL RISK
The US-Israeli attack on Iran risks plunging the world into chaos. The facts leave no room for doubt: this is an illegal war, both under US law and international statutes.
The US president has repeatedly stated that Iran cannot be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared after the latest round of negotiations that “good progress” was being made on an agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.
The current intervention in Iran is the culmination of a long campaign by the American and Israeli right wing to reshape the Middle East and the Muslim world at gunpoint.
It’s yet another intervention in a long history of disastrous foreign actions that have destabilized the country since Britain and the Soviet Union overthrew Reza Shah Pahlavi in 1941, and the CIA and MI6 orchestrated a coup to oust the democratically elected Iranian Prime Minister, Mohammad Mossadegh, in 1953.
The consequences of this attack will likely be dire for the region, but also for the rest of the world. Iran has already retaliated by attacking US bases in Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. The first reports of casualties are already emerging, and it seems unlikely that Iran will hold back. It’s clear that the Islamic Republic views this as an existential threat.
Tehran will turn to its allies: the Houthis in Yemen, the Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq, and Hezbollah in Lebanon, who, despite having been weakened by two years of Israeli attacks, with the aid and complicity of the United States, have sufficient capacity to expand the conflict throughout the region.
Iran has already closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a quarter of the world's oil and a third of its liquefied natural gas pass. As a consequence, oil prices will skyrocket and the global economy will be affected.
This war of aggression also has a cultural component. Reality: Israel and the United States are carrying it out during the month of Ramadan. Muslims around the world are fasting.
For billions of them, this is a month of spirituality, peace, and solidarity.
Images of Iranian Muslims killed by Israeli and American bombs could fuel the clash of civilizations narrative pitting the Judeo-Christian world against Islam.
Muslims in European capitals, along with anti-war activists, will see this conflict for what it is: a clear act of aggression by the United States and Israel. World public opinion will not be easily swayed in the direction Trump and Netanyahu would like.
CONSEQUENCES
Therefore, Trump and Netanyahu's attack on Iran has the potential to plunge the world into a deep crisis. More refugees, more economic turmoil, more trauma, more death, and more destruction can be expected. The only hope now is that the more level-headed among world leaders will prevail to contain this conflict and limit the actions of Trump and Netanyahu.
At the time of writing, bombs continue to fall on several Iranian cities. Tragedy seems inevitable, and many innocent people will suffer. Is the nuclear issue the motive for the attack? Judging by the statements of the US president, the objective has shifted from trying to reach a nuclear agreement to forcing regime change.
Therefore, diplomacy must be prioritized. Attempting to force regime change by launching an illegal war is reckless. If Iran becomes even more destabilized, the entire Middle East will be plunged into total turmoil. From there, the outcome for the entire world is dangerously uncertain, primarily due to Trump's treacherous actions.
