Jusvinza: Silencing the Aftereffects of Chikungunya

For those in Cuba who have endured the ordeal of suffering from the chikungunya virus, this news could be seen as the certainty of relief. Because the body, sometimes, holds memories it would rather forget. Especially when the memory is a persistent, throbbing pain in the joints that threatens to be endless.
Then, science appears and once again demonstrates that innovation can also be an act of empathy. It confirms this with Jusvinza, the synthetic peptide that saved lives. in the intensive care units during the darkest days of the pandemic.

The drug, developed by scientists at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), is now being revalidated as a safe and extraordinarily effective therapy for improving the quality of life of people who continue to struggle with inflammation that impairs their health.
This is evidenced by the most recent results of clinical trials conducted in hospitals in Havana and Matanzas. In these institutions, patients recovering from chikungunya in the post-acute and chronic stages of the disease "resolved the painful and inflammatory symptoms of the secondary joints."

This was reported by Dr. Julio Baldomero Hernández, Director of Clinical Research at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), in a meeting held days ago with the country's top leadership.
According to details on the official website of the Presidency, the application of Jusvinza allowed many Cubans to resume their daily activities without the burden of stiffness.
Hernández explained that it was also demonstrated that it could not only be effective in treating painful and inflammatory clinical manifestations, but that once the symptoms were resolved, the relief could also be persistent over time.
Background of a “savior”
This drug is not a newcomer to the Cuban therapeutic landscape. Its journey began with the search for solutions to highly complex autoimmune diseases.
In fact, the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (CECMED) had already granted Emergency Use Authorization within the coronavirus treatment protocol, recognizing its ability to curb the dreaded "cytokine storm."
It’s this same ability to modulate the immune response, without completely suppressing it, that makes Jusvinza ideal for treating chronic inflammatory processes. The magic of this preparation lies in its origin: it’s a peptide derived from a human protein (HSP60), which explains its very high safety profile.
By acting as a fine regulator of the immune system, it prevents the body from attacking itself. The Cuban Journal of Rheumatology emphasizes that its use induces a notable clinical improvement by reducing pro-inflammatory molecules.
This benefit has already been successfully validated in patients suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis.

According to statements made by Dr. Marta Ayala Ávila, Director General of the CIGB (Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology), to the official website of the Presidency, the new CIGB plant, located in the Mariel Special Development Zone, is currently producing active pharmaceutical ingredients for this product.
In the first quarter of 2026 alone, they delivered some 21,000 Jusvinza bulbs to the National Health System, three times more than the amount distributed last year.
In addition to the statistical data, the capacity of Cuban biotechnology to adapt to new health challenges shines through.

This drug validates this. What began as laboratory research has now translated into direct relief for the skin and bones of those who believed that the pain left by the chikungunya virus would be trapped in their bodies forever.
Certainly, in a world where high-tech medicines are often ridiculously expensive, Cuba and its arsenal of researchers dedicate their expertise and wisdom to a science that restores everyone's health and well-being.
Jusvinza is a prime example. Not only does it extinguish molecular fires; it also illuminates the path to recovery by demonstrating that when scientific precision is combined with the warmth of public service, the results are, quite simply, healing.
