Canada officially imposed new tariffs of 15, 25, and 50 percent on U.S. products this Tuesday, a measure that took effect at 12:01 a.m. New York time and affects U.S. imports valued at 27.6 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 19.95 billion U.S. dollars).

According to the official list published by the Canadian government, the new tariffs apply to selected products among those affected by U.S. duties, with individual rates corresponding to the percentage applied by Washington to the same goods.

"As a result of the United States' decision [...], the Government of Canada will match U.S. Section 338 tariffs, dollar for dollar," Ottawa stated in its official product and tariff list.

Risk of New Trade Escalation

The decision comes after Prime Minister Mark Carney's government opted to maintain a firm stance against U.S. President Donald Trump, thereby strengthening its negotiating position vis-à-vis Washington, according to Bloomberg.

In recent months, the trade relationship between the U.S. and Canada has deteriorated into a tariff war. Since February 2025, Washington has imposed duties on numerous Canadian imports, to which Ottawa has responded with retaliatory measures.

Negotiations to reach a new trade agreement failed in August 2026, triggering a fresh escalation of tariff measures between both countries.
