Cuban Triple Jumper Wins Silver in Diamond League

Cuban triple jumper Lazaro Martinez won today the silver medal at the Athletics Diamond League second stop, held in the Chinese city of Shanghai.

Martínez, last year world champion in the cadets' category, reached 16.76 meters and was only surpassed by Russian Lyukman Adams (17.10), while the bronze went to the host Bin Dong (16.69).

Yaime Perez, the other Cuban representative, finished fourth in the women's discus throw with a mark of 61.22 m and was very close to reach a place on the podium.

The title of this event was achieved by the Olympic and world champion Sandra Perkovic (70.52), from Croatia, followed by Australia's Dani Samuels (67.89) and France's Melina Robert-Michon (62.66), according to the website of the International Federation of the discipline.

Cuban pole vaulter Yarisley Silva won a silver medal at the first stop of the Diamond League, with modest result of 4.53 meters in Doha, Qatar.

The winners of each specialty in this athletic competition accumulate four points in the race for the final prize, while those ending second and third earn two and one units, respectively.

Such tournaments serve Cubans as training for the Central American and Caribbean Games to be held in Veracruz, Mexico, next November.
