Yan Carlos Ramírez and Denis Zamora are expected to be two of Cuba's starting players in the U-12 Baseball World Cup, scheduled to take place in Tainan, Chinese Taipei, from July 25 to August 3.
Ramírez, a native of Matanzas, is considered the leading pitcher for the Cuban squad. When he is not on the mound, he is expected to take up duties at shortstop. The young athlete was previously part of the preselection roster for last year’s Pan American Championship. Although he did not make the final team, he demonstrated significant skill and promise.
“I’ve felt good, and thanks to the coaches, we have been training hard. We are nearly ready to face the competition. I wasn’t originally a pitcher, but I’ve developed in that area thanks to the support from my coaches in the province. Here, they’re also using me as a shortstop,” Ramírez said.
Denis Zamora, from Villa Clara, also offers dual utility as both a pitcher and a third baseman. He represented Santa Clara in the Little League World Series last year.
“It is a great honor for me and my family to represent Cuba in this event. During training, I’ve focused a lot on defense. We’ve practiced fielding grounders extensively, and that has helped us improve,” Zamora said.
Team Cuba is finalizing preparations as it aims to make a strong showing on the international stage.
