The renowned troubadour Silvio Rodríguez is the focus of the new chapter of the documentary series "Ruta ADN Cuba". Its premiere will take place next Thursday at the capital's Charles Chaplin cinema, as part of the intense programming of the 9th Summer Film Festival.
This project, which fuses a scientific-social approach, is directed by Alejandro Gil and is based on research conducted by Dr. Beatriz Marcheco, director of the National Center for Medical Genetics.
The series consists of six chapters presenting a pioneering study on genetic ancestry, featuring prominent figures from Cuban public life.
Among the personalities explored in the various episodes of the documentary series are actor Osvaldo Doimeadiós, volleyball player Mireya Luis, researcher Zuleica Romay, visual artist Roberto Diago, and anthropologist Nelson Aboy.
In an exchange this Tuesday at the headquarters of the Cuban Institute of Cinematic Art and Industry, Marcheco expressed her satisfaction at incorporating the genetic history of Silvio Rodríguez in this final episode, highlighting his relevance as one of the great personalities of the Cuban music scene.
This project moves beyond the traditional confines of laboratories and research, using new genetic technologies and tools to offer an intimate look at ourselves as individuals, families, and a nation, the specialist commented.
In his address, the poet and founder of the Nueva Trova movement emphasized that the audiovisual work is not only interesting for its inquiry into the ancestral origins of his family and the places they inhabited, but it also reveals connections with unknown people who have contributed to his existence. He also expressed his joy at having developed the soundtrack for this presentation, noting that music is intrinsically linked to his DNA.
Like the other protagonists, the singer-songwriter noted that the presence of the filming cameras did not hinder his ability to appear natural in front of the lens.
"I was so absorbed in what Beatriz was proposing to me that I did not even pay attention to the cameras, I could not do it, as I was immersed in a fascinating world. One becomes like a child before science, a neophyte, and I simply let myself go," he added.
Gil described the audiovisual work as a "wonderful journey" that explores the diverse trajectories of personalities who enrich Cuba's cultural, sports, and academic spheres.
"In the case of Silvio, who concludes the series, I feel great emotion because I had wanted to work with him for a long time, and life gave me the possibility to have a small piece of his life, facilitated by Dr. Marcheco's research," he confessed.
Furthermore, he revealed that there is a possibility of a second season of "Ruta ADN Cuba". He highlighted that the premiere of the final episode will be, as usual, open to the public, scheduled for next Thursday the 28th at 5:00 p.m. at the Charles Chaplin cinema.
