Cuba avoided descending to the basement of the standings after defeating Bulgaria on Sunday in tie break. The island team, now with two victories in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL), is ranked 12th with five points, as published by the VNL.

The group in which the Cuban team played this week was based in Orleans, France and, as happened in Ottawa, only those led by Nicolás Vives barely left with a victory, to add two at the general level.

Against Bulgaria, the Cubans commanded three sets by two by prevailing in the tie break. Cuba dominated in points per attack with 62, and in service, with eight goals.

However, they were left to owe again in their own mistakes, by giving up 35 points to their rivals, an aspect in which the Europeans were better, as well as in blocks, with 13 cards, to eight by Cuba.

For the island team, the opposite Jesús Herrera shone again, who led as the top scorer with 27 points (21 per attack) for his team, followed by his accomplice in this League of Nations, Miguel Ángel López, who scored 19 goals.

Also notable, in a certain way, were Javier Concepción and Osniel Melgarejo in blocking, as well as Herrera himself, who nailed six points with his powerful serve. Cuba’s last victory in this League of Nations occurred on Saturday June 10 against Brazil, also in extra time.
