Event in Brazilian State Denounces US Actions and Demands End to Blockade
The Brazilian state of São Paulo hosted an event condemning the ongoing actions and threats by the United States against Cuba, which also called for an end to the American economic blockade.
Convened by the José Martí Association of Cuban Residents in Brazil, São Paulo Chapter (Ancreb-SP), the gathering took place this Saturday at the headquarters of the Central Workers' Union of the South American country and was dedicated to the 173rd anniversary of the birth of Cuba's National Hero, José Martí.
Tribute to Martí and Fallen Combatants
During the event, which took place in an atmosphere of steadfast support for the Revolution begun in 1959 and the defense of its sovereignty, a floral tribute was placed in honor of the Apostle. Attendees also remembered the 32 Cuban combatants who fell on January 3rd in Venezuela, according to a note from the island's General Consulate in São Paulo.
The aggression against Caracas and other Venezuelan sites, with a death toll of approximately 100 people, was ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump. It also resulted in the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who have remained prisoners in New York since then.
Broad Participation Reflects Sustained Support
The event, broadcast live on the Brazilian Central Workers' Union's YouTube channel, saw broad in-person and virtual participation by Cubans residing in this country and Brazilian friends of the island, reflecting sustained support for the Cuban cause, the text indicated.
It was presided over by Isaura Guzmán, President of Ancreb-SP; Reinaldo José Carvalho, from the Brazilian Center for Solidarity with Peoples and the Struggle for Peace; and Ronaldo Luis Rodríguez, Interim President of the Central Workers' Union of Brazil.
Among the participants were leaders from the São Paulo Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, the Workers' Party, the Communist Party of Brazil, the Popular Unity Party, and the Landless Rural Workers' Movement, among other organizations.
Speeches Highlight Martí's Ideals and Cuban Resistance
The speeches emphasized the enduring relevance of Martí's ideas and the resistance of the Cuban people against external threats and the intensification of the blockade imposed by Washington on the Antillean nation over 60 years ago.
From Foz do Iguaçu, Yordanis Crespo Urrutia reaffirmed the rejection of war and interference, stating that Cuba "lives and resists with dignity and fullness" and is not alone.
In turn, Cuban-Brazilian Marcos Valladares, a resident of Rio de Janeiro, denounced the human consequences of any military aggression against the island and warned that an attack would mean destruction, pain, and trauma for the Caribbean.
Meanwhile, Raimundo Jesús Gálvez, a resident of São Paulo, evoked Martí's thought and reaffirmed the Cuban people's determination to defend peace, independence, and national sovereignty.
