Oxfam: Billionaires Pose a Threat to Democracy

Record Billionaire Wealth in 2025 Could Undermine Democratic Systems
According to a report from Oxfam, the international confederation dedicated to combating poverty, the surge of billionaire wealth to record levels in 2025 could pose a threat to democracy by concentrating political and media power.
Wealth Concentration Translates to Political Power
The report, published this Monday, states that extreme wealth concentration translates into political power: billionaires are 4,000 times more likely to hold public office than the average citizen. The organization argues this reveals a "dangerous political inequality."
The document explains that their fortunes allow them not only to acquire luxury goods but also to influence public agendas and governments, control newspapers or social media platforms, and even "proscribe opposition to ensure they are above the law." The authors warn, "This power grants billionaires control over our future, undermining political freedom and the rights of everyone else."
Complicity of Authorities
In this regard, Oxfam maintains that several governments are "choosing to defend wealth over freedom." "They are choosing to let the wealthy rule, while suppressing the voice, choice, and power of people over their own lives," it states.
Consequently, billionaires now own more than half of the world's largest media companies and major social media platforms. Notable recent acquisitions include Jeff Bezos's purchase of The Washington Post, Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter (now X), and Patrick Soon-Shiong's purchase of the Los Angeles Times.
