Lula: priority in 2025 is that horror does not return to Brazil

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Monday that one of the priorities of his government in 2025 is that horror does not return to Brazil, referring to his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022).
“I have a cause, and it will motivate me in 2025, and it is not to allow, under any circumstances, that this country returns to the horror left by the mandate of my predecessor (Bolsonaro), ensuring that democracy remains in this country,” Lula said this Monday during his first meeting of the year with his ministers.
He insisted on not wanting to hand the nation over “again to neo-fascism, neo-Nazism, authoritarianism. And we have to say loudly and clearly: we want to elect a government that continues the democratic process,” he said.
He predicted that this year will witness the results of the public policies initiated after what he called a “period of reshuffling several ministries”, following their dismantling under the previous Government.
“Now we have a very important issue, which is reconstruction, unity and cheap food on the workers’ table, because food is expensive, something all ministries are well aware of”, he admitted.
Lula said he has recovered from head surgery after a fall at home, and reiterated the Government’s commitment to maintaining democracy.
He asked his ministers to be vigilant in order to avoid giving arguments to opponents who, in his words, have already started campaigning for the presidential elections next year.
From now on, no incumbent minister will be able to issue decrees that might create confusion, without that decree going through the Presidency of the Republic, he emphasized.
Regarding the United States and the return of Republican Donald Trump to power, the former labor leader explained that many people predict that his election could cause problems for world democracy.
“Trump was elected to rule the United States. I, as president of Brazil, encourage him to do a fruitful job, so that the Brazilian and American people improve, and so that they continue to be the historical partner they have been to Brazil,” he encouraged.
