Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel is attending today the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Havana-based cultural institution Casa de las Americas, on April 28.

At the ceremony, which takes place in the entity’s Che Guevara Hall, personalities with a notable intellectual work linked to Casa de las Americas will receive the Haydeé Santamaría and Alejo Carpentier medals, as well as the Distinction for National Culture.

Founded in 1959 by Haydeé Santamaría, Casa de las Américas disseminates, researches, sponsors, awards, and publishes the work of writers, visual artists, musicians, theater artists and scholars of literature, arts, and social sciences of the continent.

It is conceived as a venue for meetings and dialogues with different perspectives in a climate of renewing ideas.

The ceremony was also attended by the members of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (CC PCC), Roberto Morales, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodriguez, as well as cultural personalities.

The day before, the 64th edition of the Casa de las Americas Literary Award was held, and Argentina was the winner in three of the four categories called for this year: Novel, Theater, Artistic-Literary Essay, and Literature for Children and Young People.
