The Cuban Boxing Federation today made official its affiliation to World Boxing, an organization provisionally recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the governing body of Olympic boxing.
The decision responds to the disqualification of the International Boxing Association (IBA) by the IOC, which established as a condition to participate in Olympic competitions the membership in World Boxing, already endorsed by more than 100 national federations.
According to a note issued by the Cuban Olympic Committee, the Cuban Boxing Federation seeks to guarantee Cuba’s continuity in these competitions, where its boxers have won 42 golds, 19 silvers and 19 bronzes.
The Caribbean organization notified the IBA about the change, thanking it for the relations maintained and its contribution to the development of boxing on the island.
The decision was also shared with athletes, coaches and national sports authorities.
