The Catalonian city of Badalona on Saturday paid an emotional tribute to Ernesto Che Guevara, on the anniversary of his assassination on October 9, 1967, in Bolivia.

The Che Commission of Badalona, made up of 31 local institutions, political organizations, and unions, organized the traditional tribute to the Heroic Guerrilla in the square that bears his name in that city, the coordinator of Cubainformación, Jose Manzaneda, told Prensa Latina.

It has become a tradition that has been observed without interruption since 1997, when neighbors and entities of Badalona occupied the square, still without a name, and placed an image of Che demanding that it be named after Che Guevara.

Finally, two years later, the municipality agreed to name the square Ernesto Guevara de la Serna.

The rally also served to read a declaration condemning the United States blockade against Cuba, demand for the return of the Guantanamo Base, and a denunciation of “US imperialism and its interference and destabilizing actions in the world.”

Cuban Consul in Barcelona Alfonso Casanova attended the meeting and took the floor to express his gratitude for the heartfelt tribute to Che Guevara.

The event concluded with a floral tribute to Che at his monument.
