Southern Command Reports Attack on Vessel in International Waters
The United States attacked another boat allegedly linked to drug trafficking in international waters of the Pacific on Monday, resulting in the deaths of two crew members and one survivor, according to Southern Command.
The US armed forces detailed that, following the attack, the Coast Guard activated the search and rescue system to locate the surviving crew member.
On its X account, Southern Command specified that the operation was ordered by General Francis L. Donovan, who has been in charge of this military division since last February 5th.
Context of Escalating Operations
The attack on the boat, which adds to 40 similar operations conducted in international waters since August 2025, took place on a "known drug trafficking route," according to the same source.
Also this Monday, the United States carried out an attack on a submarine in the Pacific, in coordination with Colombian armed forces, resulting in the destruction of 10 tons of cocaine and the detention of four suspects.
The new attack on a vessel in the Pacific occurs one week after the official visit of Colombian President Gustavo Petro to Washington, where he met with his counterpart, Donald Trump, following disagreements between the two.
Historical Precedent
The presence of US military vessels and aircraft in international waters began in the Caribbean several months before the military intervention in Caracas, which culminated in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Deputy Cilia Flores, to transfer them to a federal prison in New York.
