A construction project will renovate the facilities of the Birán Historic Site, located in the municipality of Cueto in Holguín province, with the goal of restoring heritage structures affected by the passage of time and weather-related events.
Although the works are currently halted due to the country’s ongoing energy situation, the project seeks to restore, rehabilitate, and remodel the existing elements that make up the complex, ensuring their preservation and original functionality. “The plan guarantees the conservation and functional recovery of the site’s structures,” Belkis Díaz Tizón, design director of the Engineering Services Company Vértice, told ACN.
While the Holguín-based entity is responsible for developing the general plan, drainage systems, and the integration of the works into the surrounding environment, the initiative also includes the incorporation of new buildings based on the original blueprints, she explained.
Completed works include the rehabilitation of the house designated for site administration, the design of an internal parking area, and solutions to strengthen the protection and security of the complex.
The most significant rehabilitation progress has been recorded in the reconstruction of the Haitian barracks and the repair of the family home, where structural damages are currently being addressed.
Agricultural and energy-related efforts include the restoration of the orange grove, with the installation of both an irrigation system and a photovoltaic system, carried out in coordination with the agricultural sector. Additionally, repairs have been made to the three roads connecting to Birán, incorporating technical solutions for bridges, culverts, and roadways.
Díaz Tizón emphasized that a critical aspect of the work is author supervision over buildings that are decades old and present soil settlement issues. Engineering solutions are being implemented to stabilize structures affected by subsidence.
The specialist added that the company executes projects requiring strict heritage oversight and subject to approval by the National Monuments Commission, with the objective of ensuring the comprehensive preservation of infrastructures with patrimonial or cultural value.
The development of construction activities at the Birán Historic Site is part of the program of events commemorating the centennial of the birth of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro Ruz, to be observed on August 13, 2026.
