Director's Guild Win Makes 'One Battle After Another' an Oscar Frontrunner
American director Paul Thomas Anderson claimed the top honor from the Hollywood Directors Guild (DGA) this Saturday for his film 'One Battle After Another.'
The filmmaker prevailed in a category that also included Mexican director Guillermo del Toro ('Frankenstein'), Chloé Zhao ('Hamnet'), Ryan Coogler ('Sinners'), and Josh Safdie ('Marty Supreme').
Anderson's film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio del Toro, follows the story of a former revolutionary forced to confront his past after the disappearance of his daughter.
A Strong Oscar Predictor
These awards are often a strong indicator in the Oscar race, the winners of which will be announced on March 15th.
Throughout the history of these awards, only eight winners in this category have failed to convert their victory into an Oscar for Best Director, and only two films that won the Oscar for Best Picture had not previously won the DGA award.
Other Award Winners
The award for Best First-Time Feature Film went to Charlie Polinger for his film 'The Plague,' prevailing over Hasan Hadi ('The President’s Cake'), Harry Lighton ('Pillion'), Alex Russell ('Lurker'), and Eva Victor ('Sorry, Baby').
Meanwhile, the award for Documentary Director went to Mstyslav Chernov for '2000 Meters to Andriivka,' a film following a Ukrainian battalion in its struggle to reach and reclaim a village controlled by Russia.
Television Awards
In the television awards, the series 'The Pitt' won the award for Best Dramatic Series for director Amanda Marsalis's work on the episode '6:00 PM.' In comedy, actor Seth Rogen and Canadian director Evan Goldberg took home the award for their episode 'The Oner' from 'The Studio.'
The award in the Miniseries category went to Shannon Murphy, director of 'Dying for Sex.'
