Brazil’s Minister of Institutional Relations at the Presidency, Gleisi Hoffman, warned today that a “breaking point” has been reached as the North American country “threatens to invade Brazil to free Jair Bolsonaro from prison.”

Although the spokesperson for the Trump administration did not comment on “any further action,” relations between Washington and Brasília are already at a peak of tension, following the imposition of U.S. tariffs as a form of sanction related to the judicial process against the former president in the Supreme Federal Court.

“The Bolsonaro family’s conspiracy against Brazil reached its climax today, with the statement from Donald Trump’s spokesperson that the U.S. could even use military force against our country. Tariffs against our exports and illegal sanctions against government ministers are not enough…”

Hoffman described “freedom of expression” as a pretext to justify “the conspiracy of the Bolsonaro family.”

“Only if it were the freedom to lie, coerce justice, and plan a coup d’état: these are the crimes for which Bolsonaro and his accomplices are being tried with due process,” she declared.

The trial could extend until Friday, with two votes already in favor of conviction for coup d’état, organized crime, aggravated damages, violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, and deterioration of protected assets.

The U.S. administration has used the trial against Jair Bolsonaro as a pretext to impose a 50 percent levy on exports from the South American giant and has sanctioned members of the Brazilian government and Supreme Federal Court justices, including Alexandre de Moraes, who is presiding over the case against the former president.

In a message shared on the social media platform X on September 7, the South American leader emphasized that the U.S. “cannot interfere in the decisions of Brazilian justice, contrary to what they want to impose on our country,” in a clear response to the interventionist attempts of the U.S. administration regarding Bolsonaro’s trial.

Lula da Silva defended democracy and affirmed that Brazil maintains friendly relations with all countries but has “one sole owner: the Brazilian people.”
