The resolution presented by the United States to demand an 'immediate ceasefire' in Gaza failed today at the Security Council due to China and Russia's veto.

Speaking before the body, Russia’s permanent representative, Vassily Nebenzia, described the draft as an extremely politicized instrument with an electoral objective for the northern nation rather than a real end to the conflict.

The text, he added before casting his vote, only seeks ‘to solidify US policy in the region, to talk about terrorist labels and to guarantee impunity for Israel whose criminal actions are not even mentioned in the document’.

The proposal received 11 votes in favor, three against and one abstention.

In mid-February, the United States was the only country to vote against a draft resolution submitted by Algeria, claiming that calling for an ‘immediate’ end to hostilities could jeopardize ongoing negotiations.

Since the outbreak of the conflict on October 7, Washington’s representation vetoed within the horseshoe three resolutions and one amendment aimed at calling for a ceasefire.
