WASHINGTON - At least two people were killed, including a gunman, and several injured at a mass shooting in a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, reported television channel KATC.

The shooting occurred Thursday evening at the Grand Theater on Johnston Street at 19:00 local time (23:00 GMT) during a screening of the movie 'Trainwreck'.

Although there has been no official confirmation, KATC reported several eye witnesses reporting the gunman killed himself after the shoot-out.

Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft, confirmed "an undetermined number" of casualties, and said the gunman died, without specifying whether it was a suicide.

The only official figure available on the number of injured so far was provided by Acadian Ambulance Company, which reported transporting nine people to the hospital.

"I'm on my way to Lafayette right now. Please say a prayer for the victims at Grand Theatre and their families," tweeted Louisiana governor and Republican presidential candidate Bobby Jindal.
