Among the rescued were four infants and a minor, while all 414 of the passengers were dispersed among four inflatable boats, the coast guard said in a statement.
Distress calls were sent by satellite phone, after which three units from coast guard working with the European Operation Triton arrived on the scene.
The coast guard boats escorted the passengers back to the Italian coast, although the specific destination port was not yet made public.
