Dr Jake Dunning, trial clinical lead from Oxford University, says the goal is to determine whether the drug brincidofovir could treat Ebola in humans. The medication is already used to treat other viruses.

All new patients confirmed to be Ebola positive by blood test at the charity's ELWA 3 center will be informed about the trial and can decide whether they would like to participate.

Ebola has killed more than 8,000 people over the past year in West Africa, and there is no licensed treatment or cure. Those who survive do so because of receiving supportive care such as intravenous fluid.
