By 2050, one in six people in the world (16 percent of the global population) will be over 65, which represents growth over current figures, a UN report revealed this Tuesday.

Nowadays, one in 11 people (9 percent of the world's population) is over 65, while the previous year - for the first time in history - people of that age or older outnumbered children under five, according to the report's figures.

According to World Population Prospects 2019, the number of people aged 80 and over is projected to triple from 143 million this year to 426 million in 2050.

The report also confirmed that the world population is ageing due to increased life expectancy at birth and declining fertility levels, while the number of countries facing a reduction in their population numbers is growing.

John Wilmoth, Director of the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, told reporters that while the number of people in some regions continues to grow, it is also aging rapidly.

Changes in the labor market, women's increased level of education, access to contraceptives and family planning are some of the multiple factors that indicate current and future low fertility levels.
